Details

Eddie Shack had a decent rookie season in 1958-59 with the New York Rangers. He scored seven goals and assisted on 14 for 21 points over 67 games. His 109 penalty minutes tied him for fifth in the National Hockey League with Pete Goegan.

However, Shack was not in the running for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year like the back of this 1958-59 Topps hockey card predicted. Instead, the award went to Ralph Backstrom of the Montreal Canadiens. Carl Brewer, Ab McDonald, Charlie Burns and Norm Johnson were also considered.

During the 1959-60 season, Shack almost became a member of the Detroit Red Wings. A February, 1960 trade was in the works to send Eddie and Bill Gadsby to the Motor City for Red Kelly and Billy McNeill but the trade was voided. At the start of the 1960-61 season, Shack was shipped instead to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Pat Hannigan and Johnny Wilson. Ironically, Red Kelly, who got in the way of the Detroit trade, ended up with the Maple Leafs for 1960-61, as well.

Shack played 1,047 regular season and 74 playoff games with the Rangers, Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a member of four Stanley Cup winning teams in Toronto.
