Details
It’s true – Ed Westfall was listed as a defenseman on his first two hockey cards before becoming a forward. The transition is probably what made him one of the best two-way forwards and special teams leader of his era.
In 1965-66, three of his nine goals were on special teams, two on the power play and one shorthanded. The year before, his value shone through in a 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 24, 1965. Westfall had two of Boston’s three goals, including a second period shorthanded marker that was also the game winning goal. The goal was scored just before Orland Kurtenbach came out of the penalty box and scored on Terry Sawchuk.
Westfall reached the 20 goal plateau three times over his NHL career. Two of those were career high 25 goal campaigns, the first with the Bruins in 1970-71 and the second with the New York Islanders in 1975-76.
Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, the two-time Stanley Cup champion played 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders. The first ever team captain of the Islanders scored the franchise’s first goal. On October 7, 1972, he put one past Atlanta Flames goalie Phil Myre to tie the first ever game for both clubs at 1-1. Atlanta went on to win 3-2.
