Details

The back of this 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee Ed Johnston hockey card contains an ERROR. The winning streak Johnston put up was 13 games, not 12. It started on January 31, 1971 with 23 save 6-0 shutout over the St. Louis Blues. The 13th consecutive win for Eddie came on March 18, 1971, a 7-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

That March 18 win involved Johnston making 40 saves on 43 shots. Mickey Redmond led the Red Wings with seven shots but Ed kept him off the scoresheet. The Bruins were aided by a John McKenzie hat trick and a four point game by Phil Esposito. Detroit goalie Gerry Gray was bombarded with 56 shots meaning the game was four shy of 100 combined shots on net.

Despite the incredible offense of that 1970-71 Boston Bruins team, defense may have been an issue. Johnston faced at least 30 shots in 17 games and over 40 in four. The most came in a 6-3 loss to the New York Rangers when 52 came his way. At the other end of the rink, Ed Giacomin turned away 15 of the just 18 shots put on him.

Between 1962-63 and 1977-78, Ed Johnston played 592 regular season and 18 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. In 1963-64, he became the last NHL goaltender to appear in every minute of every one of his team’s games.
