Details

Ed Giacomin finished his NHL career with the 54 shutouts shown in the stats snippet on the back of this 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee hockey card. That total still sits tied for 25th all-time, equaling fellow Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent.

In 1977-78, Eddie would appear in just nine games for the Detroit Red Wings, the last of his NHL career. Giacomin’s 3.14 goals against average over this nine games was lower than both Jim Rutherford and Ron Low, the duo that saw most of the action for the Red Wings that year.

A pro career that began as an assistant trainer and practice goalie in 1958-59 with the Clinton Comets of the EHL, eventually evolved into a spectacular NHL career. Ed spent eight years in the minors before finally getting a shot with the New York Rangers during the 1965-66 season. Playing for the Blue Shirts, Giacomin was a five time all-star in consecutive seasons from 1966-67 to 1970-71 (First Team twice, Second Team three times).

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Ed Giacomin appeared in 609 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers and Red Wings. His jersey number 1 was retired by New York in 1989, two years after he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
