Details

As for All-Star selections, this would be last of Eddie’s career. He would play in the 1972-73 All-Star game, the sixth and final for Giacomin. His 1970-71 success continued into the Stanley Cup playoffs, appearing in 12 of 14 games for the New York Rangers as the club reached the semi-final before losing to Chicago in seven games.

Between Giacomin and Gilles Villemure, the Vezina Trophy winning pair recorded 12 shutouts with Eddie getting eight and Gilles getting four. Five of those 12 were hard fought 1-0 decisions. The best defensive team in the league allowed seven goals just twice and six goals three times.

Despite averaging the same number of games played each season, Giacomin’s numbers declined steadily each season until he was put on waivers just after the start of the 1975-76 season and he was picked up by the Detroit Red Wings.

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Ed Giacomin appeared in 609 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers and Red Wings. His jersey number 1 was retired in 1989, just the second number to be raised to the rafters in Madison Square Garden at the time. Eddie was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
