Details

The stats on the back of this 1965-66 Topps hockey card are from Ed Giacomin’s 1964-65 season in the AHL with the Providence Reds. On the surface, the numbers don’t look very impressive but the Fern Flaman coached Reds were an awful team, finishing dead last in the nine team AHL with just 20 wins in 72 games.

Giacomin’s arrival with the New York Rangers system was something straight out of the 1960’s. It was actually a trade between the NHL Rangers and AHL Reds, in exchange for Aldo Guidolin, Jim Mikol, Marcel Paille and Donald “Sandy” McGregor.

After seven years in the minors, Ed played his first 36 NHL games in 1965-66 with Cesare Maniago and Don Simmons splitting the backup role. By the following season, he appeared in 68 of New York’s 70 games. By 1970-71, he was sharing Vezina Trophy honours with Gilles Villemure.

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Eddie Giacomin appeared in 609 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. All of the 65 playoff games were with New York. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
