Despite missing the first 16 games during the inaugural 1970-71 NHL season for the Buffalo Sabres, Don Marshall put up great numbers with 49 points on 20 goals and 29 assists. In his first game with the club, Marshall scored a first period goal in a 7-2 win over Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens.
On December 26, 1970, the expansion Sabres walked into the Montreal Forum in came out with a 4-4 tie with the Canadiens. Against his original NHL team, Marshall assisted on three of the four goals as Buffalo came back from a 4-1 deficit. He had helpers on markers by Gilbert Perreault, Ron Anderson and Eddie Shack.
Don had three more 3-point games over the course of the 1970-71 season, one each against the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and Minnesota North Stars, all three games were wins for the Sabres.
What he would not experience that year was a hat trick. Marshall recorded just two over his lengthy NHL career. The first was with the Canadiens on February 16, 1961 in a 9-1 win over the Boston Bruins. In that game, he scored three on Boston goalie Bruce Gamble and added an assist on a Bernie Geoffrion goal for a four-point game. His second goal of the game was the game winner and his hat trick marker was scored shorthanded.
the second hat trick of his career came on March 29, 1967 at Madison Square Garden in a 10-5 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Marshall scored his 22nd, 23rd and 24th of the season and also assisted on a Bob Nevin goal for another 4-point game.
Between 1951-52 and 1971-72, Don Marshall played 1,176 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. Marshall was a five-time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs.
