Details
Over just 19 games in the 1980-81 playoffs, Dino Ciccarelli scored 14 goals and assisted on seven for 21 points. This performance came after previously playing a whole 32 regular season games in the National Hockey League. The rookie records of 14 goals and 21 points still stand today. Jake Guentzel of the Pittsburgh Penguins tied the points record in 2016-17, playing six more games.
The North Stars beat the odds that season to reach the Stanley Cup final before being bounced by the New York Islanders in five games. Along the way, Minnesota swept the Boston Bruins in the opening round before taking out the Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames to earn their spot in the final. Steve Payne led the way with 17 goals and 29 points over 19 games. Bobby Smith was right behind with 25 points.
In 1981-82, Ciccarelli had a career year in just his first full year in the league. He scored 55 goals and assisted on 51 for 106 points. He finished fourth in the NHL for goal scoring behind Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy and Dennis Maruk. Dino finished tied for ninth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy with Dave Taylor of the Los Angeles Kings.
Prior to his serious leg injury, mentioned on the back of the card, he led the OHL with 72 goals in 1977-78 with the London Knights, two more goals than Wayne Gretzky of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. That mark remains a single season record for the Knights. He finished third in overall scoring with 142 points, a distant 50 points behind Bobby Smith of the Ottawa 67’s.
Ciccarelli went on to play 1,232 regular season and 141 playoff games in the NHL between 1980-81 and 1998-99 with the North Stars, Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers.
