Details
ERROR. As was common with hockey cards in the late 1960’s, the stats section was left empty for players that weren’t full time in the NHL during the previous season. It shows that Sanderson had never played a game in the league. In fact, Derek appeared in two games for the Bruins in 1965-66 and two more in 1966-67.
Derek Sanderson led the OHA Junior “A” with 101 points in 1966-67, earning the Eddie Powers Trophy. He also led in assists with one more than teammate Jim Lorentz. His 41 goals placed him second, ten behind leader Mickey Redmond of the Peterborough TPT’s. Derek also finished second in the league with 193 penalty minutes, just three PIM behind Jim Dorey of the London Nationals.
Sanderson certainly made the “big step” to the National Hockey League for the 1967-68 season. He scored 24 goals and assisted on 25 for 49 points with the Boston Bruins and earned the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Derek appeared in 598 regular season and 56 playoff games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. He helped Boston to two Stanley Cup championships. Sanderson also played eight games in the World Hockey Association in 1972-73 with the Philadelphia Blazers.
