Details

Yes, Dennis Maruk was Washington’s leading scorer in 1980-81. However, it was 1981-82 when he created franchise history. Maruk scored 60 goals and assisted on 76 for 136 points. All were untouchable team records for many years. The goal scoring mark has since been erased by Alex Ovechkin but the assist and point totals remain franchise single season marks.

In 1981-82, Dennis was third in goal scoring behind Wayne Gretzky and his record 92 goals and Mike Bossy. He was fourth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy behind Gretzky, Bossy and Peter Stastny. We even have a documented Gordie Howe Hat Trick for Maruk on December 5, 1981.

1974-75 was Maruk’s third and final season in junior with the London Knights. He scored 66 goals and assisted on 79 for 145 points. He was third in the race for the Eddie Powers Trophy behind Bruce Boudreau of the Toronto Marlboros and Tim Young of the Ottawa 67’s.

A second round pick by the California Golden Seals at the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft, Dennis Maruk played 888 regular season and 34 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1975-76 and 1988-89 with the Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons, Capitals and Minnesota North Stars.
