Two games into the 1978-79 NHL season, on October 18, 1978, Dennis Maruk was traded from the Minnesota North Stars to the Washington Capitals for a conditional 1st round pick at the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. That selection turned out to be Tom McCarthy for the North Stars.
Dennis responded with 90 points on 31 goals and 59 assists for 90 points in 76 games for the Capitals to closer out 1978-79. He was easily team scoring leader with a 20 point edge over Guy Charron. As for Tom McCarthy, he had a career best 76 points in 1982-83 while Maruk went on to 50 and 60 goal seasons with the Caps, along with a career high 136 point campaign in 1981-82.
Of his 90 points with Washington in 1978-79, six came in a single game, a 7-5 home win over the St. Louis Blues on March 10, 1979. In the first period, he assisted on three goals by Tom Rowe, the only three goals of the period. He also assisted on a Gord Lane goal while scoring two of his own. His first of the game remained as the game winner.
On December 17, 1978, Maruk put up an over-the-top Gordie Howe Hat Trick with two goals, two assists and a first period fight with Pat Boutette in a 7-6 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Capital Centre. His second of the game, assisted by Tom Rowe and Rick Green, held as the game winner.
Between 1975-76 and 1988-89, Dennis Maruk played 888 regular season and 34 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the California Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars and Washington Capitals. His 136 points in 1981-82 remain a Capitals record today with Alex Ovechkin putting up the next best with 112.
