Card Notes

Starting his third season as a pro, Dennis is considered to be a top prospect by the Penguins. A third round selection in the 1972 Amateur Draft, Dennis jumped right from junior hockey into the NHL for 18 games in 1972-73, but has spent the majority of the last two seasons in the minor leagues. He’s a good angles goalie, with quick hands, and was a second All-Star selection in his final season of amateur play.

As a rookie, Dennis chalked up back to back shutouts on the road.

Details

This 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee Denis Herron hockey card is indeed an error card. His name is spelt right on the front of the card. However, on the back, O-Pee-Chee’s writers go full English, calling him ‘Dennis’ on several occasions (even in the French section).

Herron was selected in the third round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, 40th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was just the second goaltender taken in the draft, following Michel Larocque who was taken sixth overall by the Montreal Canadiens. Denis played his junior hockey with the Trois Rivieres Ducs.

Also an ERROR, Denis did not record back-to-back shutouts on the road in 1972-73. He did have two shutouts on the road over his first five NHL games but there were two games in between, including a road loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Still, a pretty impressive start to his NHL career. After letting in just two goals in his first game, a 5-2 win over the California Golden Seals, Herron was in net on October 17, 1972 with the Pittsburgh Penguins visiting the Islanders on Long Island for the first time ever. Denis made 24 saves while Ken Schinkel scored two, including the game winner. Ron Schock had three assists in the 5-0 win.

On October 24, 1972, Herron was again in the Pittsburgh net for a game at Pacific Coliseum against the Vancouver Canucks. He turned away all 23 shots in a 4-0 win with Bryan Hextall scoring the game winning goal and Schinkel scoring his sixth goal of the young 1972-73 NHL season.

Between 1972-73 and 1985-86, Denis Herron played 462 regular season and 15 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Penguins, Kansas City Scouts and Montreal Canadiens. He had three separate stints with the Penguins but it was with the Habs where he won a Vezina Trophy and William Jennings Trophy.
