Size, muscle and leading scorer. Bryan Hextall proved all three of those attributes on December 19, 1970 when he obtained a Gordie Howe Hat Trick. And, it was against Mr. Hockey and the Red Wings. In a 9-1 win by the Pittsburgh Penguins over the visiting Red Wings, Hextall scored a goal while assisting on the winning goal by Duane Rupp. He engaged in fisticuffs with Garry Unger in the third period.

In 1970-71, Bryan did lead the Penguins in scoring but with a meagre 48 points. His best season in the NHL offensively would come two years later when he contributed 54 points in his final full season with Pittsburgh.

Bryan appeared in his first 21 NHL games in 1962-63 with the New York Rangers. From there, it was a long wait in the minors before he would get a crack at major league hockey again. The Oakland Seals selected him in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. However, he would never play for the club and would continue on in the minors until being picked up by the Penguins for the 1969-70 season.

Between 1962-63 and 1975-76, Bryan Hextall appeared in 549 regular season and 18 playoff games in the National Hockey League. Along with the Rangers and Penguins, he also played for the Atlanta Flames, Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota North Stars.
