Prior to starting the 1972-73 NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings, Denis DeJordy bounced around over the summer of 1972. He was traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the New York Islanders. Prior to the start of the campaign and before playing for the Islanders, he was traded to the Red Wings with Don McLaughlin for Arnie Brown and Gerry Gray.
DeJordy played 24 games for Detroit in 72-73 and recorded the last of his 15 NHL shutouts. On February 25, 1973 in a 5-0 over the St. Louis Blues at Detroit Olympia, Denis turned away all 24 shots put his way. Wayne Merrick gave him the most trouble with six shots. Marcel Dionne led the Red Wings offense with two goals, including the game winner.
Included in DeJordy’s minor league accolades are an EPHL rookie of the year selection in 1959-60 with the Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds. In 1962-63 with the AHL’s Buffalo Bisons, Denis was awarded both the Harry Hap Holmes Award as the league’s top goaltender and the Les Cunningham Award as MVP. He helped the Bisons to a Calder Cup win on a team led offensively by John McKenzie.
Between 1962-63 and 1973-74, Denis DeJordy played 316 regular season and 18 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings. In 1971, he was part of the trade between the Kings and Habs that saw Rogie Vachon go to Los Angeles.
