Details
Dean Prentice made the jump directly from junior to the NHL in 1952-53, appearing in five games with the Guelph Biltmores and 55 with the New York Rangers. He went without a point in his first 12 games with the Rangers before scoring his first of 391 in the NHL in a November 26, 1952 game at Madison Square Garden.
That night, the Rangers were hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs and Prentice put New York up 2-0 with a goal on Harry Lumley at 2:32 of the second period, assisted by Wally Hergesheimer and Paul Ronty. The Blue Shirts held on for a 4-2 win.
Prentice remained with the Rangers for over ten years until a February, 1963 trade sent him to the Boston Bruins for Don McKenney. In 1959-60, he scored a career high 32 goals. Ten times he scored 20 or more but that 32 was the only time he surpassed the 30 goal plateau. He finished fourth in the NHL that year, seven behind co-leaders Bobby Hull and Bronco Horvath.
Between 1952-53 and 1973-74, Dean Prentice played 1,378 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. He was a Second Team All-Star in 1959-60.
