Details
A slight ERROR in spelling on the back of this 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee Darryl Sutter hockey card. It’s Black Hawks, not Black Yawks. Also, it’s the Dudley Red Garrett Award, not Dudley Red Garrett Trophy.
Sutter won his Dudley Red Garrett Award in 1979-80 with the New Brunswick Hawks. His 35 goals placed him second on the club, just a single marker behind Bruce Boudreau. He finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the AHL in goal scoring and helped the Hawks reach the Calder Cup final before falling to the Hershey Bears.
Along with playing 12 playoff games for New Brunswick that year, Darryl also played seven for the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Sutter’s first NHL playoff goal came in game 3 of the opening round best-of-five series with the St. Louis Blues. He scored on Mike Liut at 3:29 of the second period, assisted by Tom Lysiak and Doug Wilson. The goal gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead and would not only serve as the game winner in the 4-1 win but the series clincher in the 3-0 sweep.
His first full season turned out to be his career best. In 1980-81, Sutter scored 40 and led the Blackhawks in goal scoring. Darryl finished fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, a great distance behind winner Peter Stastny with Larry Murphy and Don Beaupre also in the running.
On March 8, 1981, Sutter had a pair of goals over a span of just 15 seconds in a 3-2 win over the Quebec Nordiques at Le Colisée. In a fight-filled affair that saw a combined 187 penalty minutes assessed, Darryl took the Hawks from a 2-1 deficit to a 3-2 victory with his 33rd and 34th of the 1980-81 NHL season. He scored the pair on just two shots. Chicago as a team was able to put just 12 shots on Quebec goalie Dan Bouchard in the win.
Between 1979-80 and 1986-87, Darryl Sutter played 406 regular season and 51 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. Perhaps better known as an NHL head coach, Sutter has stood behind the bench for the Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings. He won a pair of Stanley Cup championships with the Kings.
