Details
Danny Grant’s Iron Man streak ended at an impressive 566 consecutive regular season NHL games played. The streak began on December 4, 1968 while he was playing for the Minnesota North Stars and ended on December 19, 1975 as a result of a torn muscle that required surgery. He would never play a full season in the NHL after 1975-76. The streak still stands as the 17th most in NHL history.
The injury happened during a game in Kansas City, a 4-1 loss to the Scouts. Grant would return for Detroit’s final six games of the season. In his first game back, a March 27, 1976 8-0 blowout of the Atlanta Flames at Detroit Olympia, Danny was impressive with a pair of goals. He put his 5th and 6th goals of the season past Atlanta goalie Phil Myre. Ed Giacomin earned the shutout, making 31 saves.
After his 50 goal season in 1974-75, just the second Red Wing after Mickey Redmond to reach the plateau, Grant would score just 34 more goals over the final four seasons of his NHL career. The sixth last of his 263 regular season goals was a game winner for the Los Angeles Kings.
On November 12, 1978 at Chicago Stadium, Danny scored his 5th of the 1978-79 NHL season on Chicago goalie Tony Esposito, assisted by Marcel Dionne and Dave Taylor, to make the score 2-0. The Kings went on to a 4-1 victory powered by a 3-point game by Butch Goring.
Between 1965-66 and 1978-79, Danny Grant played 736 regular season and 43 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars, Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings. He was the Calder Trophy winner in 1968-69 with the North Stars as NHL rookie of the year, edging out Norm Ferguson of the Oakland Seals.
