Details

On February 5, 1984, the Detroit Red Wings paid a visit to Boston Garden to play the Bruins. The Wings came away with a 6-5 win and Danny Gare recorded the 599th and 600th points of his NHL career. Gare assisted on a first period goal by Steve Yzerman to open the game’s scoring before reaching the 600 point milestone with a goal in the third period.

It was Danny’s ninth of the 1983-84 NHL season at 9:36 of the third, assisted by John Barrett and Colin Campbell. The goal, scored on Boston goalie Doug Keans, made the score 5-4 for the visitors. It was also Gare’s only shot on net in the game. As a team, the Wings mustered just 21 shots. Ron Duguay led Detroit with a pair of goals while Ray Bourque recorded three points for the Bruins on two goals and an assist.

Gare would record just 85 more points over the rest of his NHL career to finish with 685. The two-time 50 goal scorer had a career best 89 points with the Sabres in 1979-80, the year he tied for the goal-scoring lead with Blaine Stoughton and Charlie Simmer, each with 56.

In 1983-84, Danny recorded that last two of his 25 career playoff goals. Both came in game two of Detroit’s opening round series with the St. Louis Blues. The Red Wings won the game 5-3, their only win of the series and their first playoff win since 1977-78. Gare also collected 22 minutes in penalties, mostly from a late game battle that included Colin Campbell from the Wings, along with Rob Ramage, Perry Anderson and Brian Sutter from the Blues.

Between 1974-75 and 1986-87, Danny Gare played 827 regular season and 6 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers. The two-time 50 goal scorer was a second round pick by the Sabres at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft after a stand-out junior career with the Calgary Centennials.
