In his third year with the Calgary Centennials of the WCHL, 1973-74, Danny Gare scored 68 goals and totaled 127 points, earning All-Star honours at right wing. He tied for second spot in the league for goal scoring with Dennis Sobchuk, a single marker ahead of Calgary teammate Mike Rogers and 22 behind leader Ron Chipperfield.

In the overall scoring race, his 127 points were good for just seventh in the high scoring league. He helped the Centennials to the final before being swept by the Regina Pats.

Although just a second round pick by the Buffalo Sabres, Gare exceeded expectations with his 31 goals and 31 assists for 62 points in his rookie 1974-75 NHL season. In the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, Danny finished third behind Eric Vail of the Atlanta Flames and Pierre Larouche of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He added 13 points in 17 playoff games, helping the Sabres reach the Stanley Cup final before bowing out to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The fourth of his seven goals in those 1974-75 playoffs came in overtime of game 1 in the semi-final against the Montreal Canadiens. With the game tied at 5-5 at the end of regulation, Gare came through at 4:42 of the first overtime period, scoring on Ken Dryden with an assist going to Craig Ramsay.

Between 1974-75 and 1986-87, Danny Gare played 827 regular season and 64 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers. He had two 50 goal seasons with the Sabres and his 56 in 1979-80 tied him for the NHL lead with Charlie Simmer of the Los Angeles Kings and Blaine Stoughton of the Hartford Whalers.
