Card Notes

Claude Provost, a playoff star with the Canadiens last spring, is one of those workhorse players who thrives on heavy duty. Though not particularly big, he’s solid on his skates and a tough man to knock off stride or to fend off if he is checking you.

Details

In those 1958-59 Stanley Cup playoffs, Claude Provost scored six goals and assisted on two for eight points over eleven games. Three of the six were game winning goals and two of those were in the final two of Montreal’s semi-final series with the Chicago Blackhawks.

In that opening round, the Canadiens had taken a 2-0 series lead but the Blackhawks came back with two wins of their own to tie things up. In game 5 at the Montreal Forum, Claude scored at 14:35 of the first period on Chicago goalie Glenn Hall, assisted by Dickie Moore and Doug Harvey. This goal made the score 3-0 and the Habs held on for a 4-2 win.

Two nights later at Chicago Stadium, Provost scored a pair of goals. The first was shorthanded with Andre Pronovost in the box for hooking. The second was scored with just 1:28 left in regulation time to break a 4-4 tie, giving Montreal the game and series win.

In the Stanley Cup final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Claude had a pair of goals in game 2, both in the third period. The teams went into the final frame tied 1-1. Provost scored the game winner in the 3-1 victory at 5:02 on Johnny Bower, assisted by Doug Harvey. He then added the insurance marker at 18:33 with help from Harvey and Phil Goyette.

Between 1955-56 and 1969-70, Claude Provost played 1,005 regular season and 126 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The nine-time Stanley Cup champion was awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy in 1967-68, the first year the award was handed out.
