Details

Chuck Lefley came over to the St. Louis Blues from the Montreal Canadiens in a November 28, 1974 trade for Don Awrey. He started the 1974-75 NHL season off with three points in 18 games for the Habs. In 57 games with the Blues, Lefley scored 23 and assisted on 26 for 49 points. On St. Louis, this placed Chuck behind Garry Unger, Pierre Plante and Wayne Merrick.

Interestingly, his first game with St. Louis after the trade was against the Canadiens at the Montreal Forum on November 30. Lefley was left off the scoresheet in the 7-1 loss, putting two shots on Michel Larocque. Don Awrey also went without a point for Montreal.

Over the remainder of the campaign, Chuck had four games with three point or more. His best match offensively was a four point night at home against the Washington Capitals on December 7, 1974. In an 8-2 win, Lefley had two goals while assisting on markers by Garry Unger and Garnet Bailey.

The following year, 1975-76, his first full year with the Blues, Lefley had a career year with 43 goals and 42 assists for 85 points. This gave him the team lead in goals and points with a two-point edge over Unger. He also led the NHL with eight shorthanded goals.

One of those eight was on January 17, 1976 when he scored three against the Boston Bruins. His second of the game was scored with Bob Gassoff in the box for holding. That marker also held as the game winner in a 7-5 home victory for the Blues. For Chuck, it was his only NHL hat trick. Derek Sanderson had a great game, as well, against his former team with four points on a goal and three assists.

Chuck Lefley played 407 regular season and 29 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1970-71 and 1980-81 with the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues. With Montreal, Lefley was part of two Stanley Cup championship teams. He also helped the Nova Scotia Voyageurs to a Calder Cup title in 1971-72.
