Details
Among Chuck Lefley’s seven game winning goals in 1972-73, two came at the Pacific Coliseum against the Vancouver Canucks. Both those were three point games for Lefley. The first was on November 24, 1972 when his sixth of the season at 7:30 of the first period made the score 2-1 in what would finish as a 9-1 victory for Montreal. It was the only shot Chuck had on Vancouver goalie Ed Dyck in the game.
Vancouver opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the match on a Gerry O’Flaherty goal but it was all they would get past Habs goalie Ken Dryden on 26 shot attempts. Lefley also assisted on a pair of goals by Murray Wilson.
The next came on December 15, 1972 in a much closer 4-2 victory for the Canadiens. Lefley’s eighth of the season, scored at 6:37 of the third, broke a 2-2 tie. The goal was scored on Bruce Bullock, assisted by Yvan Cournoyer and Bob Murdoch.
Six of his eight points in the 1973 Stanley Cup playoffs came in the final round against the Chicago Blackhawks. Lefley had a pair in a game 1 8-3 win for the Habs. In the game 6 Cup clinching 6-4 win, Chuck had assists on goals by Pete Mahovlich and Rejean Houle in the second period.
Brother Bryan Lefley played 228 regular season and two playoff games in the NHL between 1972-73 and 1977-78 with the New York Islanders, Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies. Chuck Lefley played 407 regular season and 29 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1970-71 and 1980-81 with the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues.
