Details
Charlie Burns made his return to the National Hockey League in 1967-68 after being picked up by the expansion Oakland Seals. Burns had last played in the NHL in 1962-63 with the Boston Bruins before spending four years in the WHL.
Never an offensive powerhouse, Charlie did assist on the first goal ever scored in the history of the Oakland Seals / California Golden Seals franchise. On October 11, 1967 in a 5-1 home win over the Philadelphia Flyers, Burns assisted on a Kent Douglas goal at 3:23 of the first period to give the Seals an early 1-0 lead. The historic goal was scored on Philadelphia goalie Bernie Parent.
After playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1968-69, he joined the Minnesota North Stars for the 1969-70 NHL season and finished out his NHL career with that club. His first of just three goals scored in 1969-70 came on the penalty kill in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues on December 23, 1969. With Danny O’Shea in the box for hooking, Burns put one past St. Louis goalie Glenn Hall at 12:04 of the first.
A penalty kill specialist, an impressive 16 of his 106 career goals in the NHL were scored shorthanded. In 1960-61, he led the entire league with four shorties as a member of the Boston Bruins. In a 6-2 win over the New York Rangers on March 15, 1961, Burns scored his second of the game and 15th of the season with Doug Mohns in the penalty box. It was Boston’s second shorthanded marker of the game with John Bucyk scoring with Andre Pronovost serving two or less for holding.
Between 1958-59 and 1972-73, Charlie Burns played 749 regular season and 31 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars.
