Details
In the 1970-71 Calder Cup playoffs in the American Hockey League, Butch Goring produced eleven goals and 14 assists for 25 points in just 12 games for the Springfield Kings. His performance propelled the Johnny Wilson coached team to a championship after finishing the regular season an underwhelming six games below .500.
Goring’s seven game winning goals in 1974-75 remained as a career best. 40 of his 375 career goals in the NHL were game winners and 39 were scored shorthanded. That SHG total still ranks him tied for fifth in the NHL all-time with Dave Poulin and Jari Kurri.
Butch came up with a shorthanded game winning goal on December 11, 1974 against Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens. After assisting on a first period goal by Dan Maloney to put the Kings up 1-0, his SHG at 3:37 of the second served as the game winner in a 4-1 win for the visitors. At the time, L.A. was off to an amazing 15-2-9 start to the 1974-75 NHL season.
Between 1969-70 and 1984-85, Butch Goring played 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. The four time Stanley Cup champion with the Isles had his jersey number 91 retired by the club in 2020. Amazingly, Goring is not a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
