En Français

Details
In the 1970-71 AHL Calder Cup playoffs, Butch Goring scored eleven and assisted on 14 for 25 points over just 12 games, leading the Springfield Kings to a championship. The playoff run was greatly helped by the goaltending of Billy Smith. Goring’s records have since been eclipsed, simply due to expanded playoffs in the American Hockey League.
1971-72 was Goring’s first of ten straight seasons scoring 20 or more goals. He increased his numbers in 1972-73 to 28 goals and 59 points over just 67 games. He recorded his only game winning goal of the season on October 31, 1972 in a 4-1 home win over the Vancouver Canucks.
In that game, Butch recorded a hat trick with his 5th, 6th and 7th goals of the season. His first goal of the game, scored on Dunc Wilson, assisted by Ralph Backstrom and Serge Bernier, at 3:50 of the second period held as the game winner. Goring led with eight of the 36 shots on Wilson and Backstrom had assists on all three hat trick goals.
Again against the Canucks, in the last game of the season, Goring had two points on a goal and an assist in 6-3 win. What was unusual was Butch’s tripping penalty in the second period. It was his only penalty of the 1972-73 NHL season. Despite that and his decent offensive numbers, Goring was not considered for the Lady Byng Trophy.
Between 1969-70 and 1984-85, Butch Goring played 1,107 regular season and 134 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders and Boston Bruins. The four-time Stanley Cup champion won the Lady Byng Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy once each.
