Card Notes

New York Islanders rookie center Bryan Trottier, the leading candidate for the NHL Calder Memorial Trophy, established two records for first year players during the NHL season which ended yesterday. The 19 year old finished with 95 total points and 63 assists, new standards for rookies.

Trottier’s record of 95 points by a rookie was broken five years later when Peter Stastny of the Quebec Nordiques totaled 109. Stastny also broke the assists record with 70.

These days, the record for points by a first year player stands at 132. That mark was set by Teemu Selanne in 1992-93 with the Winnipeg Jets.

The assist record remains at 70. Joe Juneau of the Boston Bruins tied the mark in 1992-93. However, Juneau played in 84 games compared to Stastny’s 77.

As for Bryan Trottier, he would definitely go on to bigger better productions during his Hockey Hall of Fame career. 1978-79 would be his best year for numbers with 47 goals and 87 assists for 134 points. That performance earned him the Art Ross Trophy and the Hart Memorial Trophy.
