Part of a masterful 1974 NHL Amateur Draft by the New York Islanders, Bryan Trottier was taken in the second round, 22nd overall. In the first round, fourth overall, New York selected Clark Gillies. The duo would go to play a combined 2,237 regular season games in the NHL and both would find their spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Perhaps his second round designation was due to Bryan being drafted after just his second season in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos. He returned to the Lethbridge Broncos for a third season in 1974-75 and solidified his playmaking ability. Trottier scored 46 goals and assisted on 98 for 144 points. He led he league in assists and was second in overall scoring behind just Mel Bridgman of the Victoria Cougars.
Trottier would have a career year in 1978-79, leading the league in assists with 87, ten more than Guy Lafleur of the Montreal Canadiens. That number helped him to the Art Ross Trophy with 134 total points, four more than Marcel Dionne of the Los Angeles Kings.
Bryan played 1,279 regular season and 221 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1975-76 and 1993-94 with the Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins. His 901 career assists ranks him 20th all-time.
