Card Notes

Only one coach led teams to victory in Memorial Cup, Allan Cup and Stanley Cup. Who was he?

En Français

Un entraîneur unique des équipes à la victoire dans la Coupe Mémoriale, La Coupe Allan et la Coupe Stanley. Qui était-il?

Details

The answer to the trivia question is Joe Primeau. Primeau coached the Toronto St. Michael’s to a Memorial Cup championship in 1946-47, the Toronto Marlboros to an Allan Cup title in 1949-50 and led the 1950-51 Toronto Maple Leafs to a Stanley Cup win in 1950-51.

As for Bronco Horvath, he was coming off a career year in 1959-60 with the Boston Bruins. His 39 goals tied Bobby Hull for the league lead and he missed out on the Art Ross Trophy by a single point, his 80 points just behind Hull’s 81.

The numbers dropped in 1960-61 to 15 goals in just 47 games and his game never really recovered in the NHL. Bronco did go on to minor league success, winning three Calder Cup titles with Rochester Americans in the AHL. In 1964-65, his 106 points with the Amerks placed him runner-up for the John B. Sollenberger Award behind just Art Stratton and his 109.

Despite his short-lived success as one of the NHL’s top goal scorers, Horvath recorded just one hat trick during his career. On February 8, 1959 at Boston Garden against the New York Rangers, he scored three of his team’s four goals in a 4-1 win. They were all scored on Gump Worsley and all assisted by John Bucyk.

Between 1955-56 and 1967-68, Bronco Horvath played 434 regular season and 36 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota North Stars. He came close to playing for all Original 6 teams. He was originally a prospect of the Detroit Red Wings but was traded to the Rangers on August 18, 1955 without ever playing a game for the club.
