The back of this 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee Brian Propp hockey card contains an ERROR. It states in the info snippet that he was the all-time WHL total point leader with 411. In fact, that number should read 511. He has since been surpassed by two other players. Rob Brown finished with 522 and Glenn Goodall is the current all-time leader with 573 points. However, Propp played just 213 games while Brown played 242 and Goodall played 399.
In his final season with the Brandon Wheat Kings, 1978-79, Brian scored 94 goals and assisted on 100 for 194 points, playing for a team that lost just five regular season games. He led in all three scoring categories by wide margins, including a 41 point edge over second place Ray Allison, a Wheat Kings teammate.
Despite the numbers, Propp was passed over by 13 teams at the 1979 NHL Entry Draft before the Philadelphia Flyers selected him. Among those going ahead of him were some decent players including Hockey Hall of Fame members Mike Gartner and Ray Bourque.
Brian didn’t disappoint in his rookie NHL season, scoring 34 and totaling 75 points while adding another 15 points over 19 playoff games. This started a string of ten consecutive seasons scoring at least 26 goals. He was fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind Ray Bourque, Mike Foligno and Pete Peeters.
Between 1979-80 and 1993-94, Brian Propp appeared in 1,016 regular season and 160 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Flyers, Boston Bruins, Minnesota North Stars and Hartford Whalers.
