Borje led the Maple Leafs with 61 assists in 1980-81. One of the NHL’s great defensemen, he is 5-time NHL First All-Star. Borje was selected as Most Valuable Player of the Swedish National Team in 1972-73.

ERROR – Borje Salming was a five time Second Team All-Star in the NHL and not a five-time First Team All-Star as the back of this 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee hockey card suggests. Salming did get selected First Team once, in 1976-77.

Borje Salming’s 61 assists in 1980-81 led the Toronto Maple Leafs with a four assist edge over Wilf Paiement. In the NHL, he finished 12th, 48 behind league leader Wayne Gretzky. This was not his career best. In 1976-77, he had 66 helpers. That also led the Maple Leafs and placed him in a three way tie for third in the NHL with Larry Robinson and Tim Young, 14 behind leader Guy Lafleur.

In 1981-82, Salming recorded the only hat trick of his NHL career. On October 10, 1981, in a 9-8 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at Maple Leaf Gardens, Borje had three goals on Chicago goalie Tony Esposito while also assisting on a Bob Manno goal for a four point game. Manno had a five point game and was a +6.

Between 1973-74 and 1989-90, Borje Salming played 1,148 regular season and 81 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. Salming was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996.
