Details

Bobby Orr won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player in three consecutive seasons from 1969-70 to 1971-72. He would not win the award again but was third in voting over the following three campaigns.

1972-73 would see Orr battle injuries and appear in just 63 regular season games for the Boston Bruins. Still, the legendary defenseman totaled 101 points. It was the fourth of six straight seasons topping the 100 point plateau. He was third in the race for the Art Ross Trophy behind just Phil Esposito and Bobby Clarke, a single point ahead of Rick MacLeish.

Included in his 101 points in 1972-73, Orr had a six assist game vs. the Vancouver Canucks on New Year’s Day, 1973. On January 1, 1973, the Canucks hosted the Bruins at Pacific Coliseum and the fans were treated to an offensive performance. Unfortunately, that performance was by the visiting team.

In the 8-2 win, Orr assisted on goals by six different Boston players: Fred Stanfield, Don Marcotte, John Bucyk, Ken Hodge, Phil Esposito and Mike Walton. Bucyk’s goal was scored with just a second left in the first. Esposito recorded a hat trick while firing eleven shots on Vancouver goalie Bruce Bullock. Bullock was pounded with 53 shots in the match.

Between 1966-67 and 1978-79, Bobby Orr played 657 regular season and 74 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. The eight-time Norris Trophy winner helped the Bruins to two Stanley Cup championships. Orr was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.
