Details

Yes, Bobby Clarke was the youngest captain in the history of the Philadelphia Flyers at the time. But, there had only been two before him, Lou Angotti and Ed Van Impe. When Mel Bridgman took over wearing the “C” in 1979, he was two years younger than Clarke was when he first took on the role.

To date, Bobby is the franchise’s all-time leader in seasons played, assists, points, shorthanded goals and 100 point seasons. He also remains the all-time leader for the Flyers in several playoff categories. Though his offensive production slowed down, Clarke still retained a 1.06 points per game average over his NHL career.

In 1979-80, his goal total dropped to a career low of 12. However, Clarke still did what Clarke did best, recording 57 assists. In a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals at the Spectrum on April 3, 1980, Bobby assisted on all four goals for the Flyers. Three of the goals were scored by Reg Leach, pushing the Riverton Rifle to the 50 goal plateau.

Despite scoring just 12, two were shorthanded game winners, both against the Vancouver Canucks at Pacific Coliseum. On November 23, 1979, Clarke scored on the penalty kill at 9:12 of the second period, assisted by Bill Barber, to make it 3-1 in a 5-2 win. On February 22, 1980, it was a shortie at 9:01 of the second, assisted by Reggie Leach, that put the Flyers up 4-3 in a 7-3 victory.

Between 1969-70 and 1983-84, Bobby Clarke played 1,144 regular season and 136 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Philadelphia Flyers. The three-time Hart Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
