The overtime goal by Bob Baun referred to in the information blurb on the back of this 1965-66 Topps hockey card occurred on April 23, 1964 at Detroit Olympia. It was game six of the Stanley Cup final series between Baun’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings. Going into the game, the Leafs were down 3-2 in the series.
Playing with a broken bone, “Boomer” scored at 1:43 of the first overtime period on Terry Sawchuk, assisted by Bob Pulford. The goal gave Toronto a 4-3 win and kept them alive in the series. Despite being diagnosed with a broken bone, Baun played game seven. Toronto won the match 4-0 to take their third consecutive Stanley Cup championship.
For Bob, it was his last of just three playoff goals over his NHL career and his only post season game winner. A stay-at-home defenseman, Baun scored just 37 goals over nearly 1,000 regular season games in the NHL. His career high was eight markers in the 1959-60 campaign.
Between 1956-57 and 1972-73, Bob Baun played 964 regular season games and 96 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oakland Seals and Detroit Red Wings. He was a four-time Stanley Cup champ with the Leafs and returned to the club for his final two seasons in the NHL.
