Bobby Schmautz was a perfect point per game in 1977-78 for the Boston Bruins. During the regular season, he totaled 54 points while playing just 54 games due to injury. In the post season, he contributed 15 points in 15 games, tying him for third on the team in playoff scoring with Terry O’Reilly, behind Brad Park and Peter McNab.
The Bruins reached the Stanley Cup final that season before losing in six games to the Montreal Canadiens. Along the way, they swept the Chicago Blackhawks in the opening round and lost just a single game to the Philadelphia Flyers in the semi-final.
1979-80 would prove to a well-travelled season for Schmautz. He started out with the Bruins but after 20 games, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. His time in Alberta lasted 29 games before another trade sent him to the Colorado Rockies. He finished out the year in Denver, appearing in 20 games while being reunited with former Boston coach Don Cherry.
Between 1967-68 and 1980-81, Bob appeared in 764 regular season and 84 playoff games in the National Hockey League. He got his start with the Chicago Blackhawks but the bulk of his time was spent with the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins. In his final season in the NHL, 1980-81, he returned to Vancouver.
