Card Notes

Bill Sutherland is not the most well-known name in hockey, to say the least. However, Sutherland holds the historic distinction of scoring the first goal in Philadelphia Flyers history. It was the lone marker in 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. That 1967-68 season saw him score the first goal in a Flyers home game, as well as, the first goal in a Los Angeles Kings home game.

Sutherland’s NHL career was limited to 250 regular season and 14 playoff games between 1962-63 and 1971-72. Over that time, he played for the Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyer, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He also played for the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA. He went on to a coaching job with the NHL Jets for several years.

Back in 1957-58, Bill exploded offensively playing for the Cincinnati Mohawks in the IHL. Playing 60 of the team’s 64 regular season games, Sutherland led the league with 55 goals. His 94 points were one behind teammate Warren Hynes for the league lead.
