Card Notes

Bill, who has a much-injured left arm, was dubbed the “one-armed bandit”. This poke-checking specialist continues to frustrate the NHL’s scoring wizards. He handles enemy snipers with a smooth, efficient technique which eliminates heavy bodychecking. He made hockey history in ’48-49 by being the first defenseman to win the Lady Byng Trophy for effective play and gentlemanly conduct.

Details

In 1948-49, the fact that defenseman Bill Quackenbush, then with the Detroit Red Wings, was not assessed a single penalty over 60 regular season and eleven playoff games to earn the Lady Byng Trophy. He received nearly double the votes of runner-up Harry Watson of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Over his career, Quackenbush sat just 95 minutes over 774 regular season games in the NHL.

Legend has it, it was his winning the Byng that got him shipped out of Detroit. In the off-season, on August 15, 1949, he was sent to the Boston Bruins with Pete Horeck for Pete Babando, Jim Peters, Clare Martin and Lloyd “Pete” Durham. This meant he missed out on a Stanley Cup championship in 1949-50, but he responded with his two highest single season point totals while still staying relatively penalty free.

Between 1942-43 and 1955-56, Bill Quackenbush played 774 regular season and 80 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He was a First Team All-Star three times and was selected Second Team twice. Quackenbush was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.
