Details

Bill Mosienko was just a few years removed from his famous 21 second hat trick during the 1951-52 NHL season. That record still stands today over 70 years later. That three goal game was the last of five during his NHL career.

1953-54 would be the second last campaign in the NHL for Mosienko. He followed up with four years as a member of the WHL’s Winnipeg Warriors in his hometown. Despite his penalty minute total rising to 17, Bill was still in the hunt for the Lady Byng Trophy. For the second time in his career, he finished third in the voting for the award, this time behind winner Red Kelly of the Detroit Red Wings and runner-up Don Raleigh of the New York Rangers.

The odd number of penalty minutes was due to a fight in Chicago’s fifth game of the 1953-54 NHL season. Playing against Red Kelly’s Red Wings, Mosienko dropped the gloves with Marty Pavelich late in the third period of a 2-1 loss.

There were no more hat tricks left up his sleeve but Bill had a three point game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on December 20, 1953 at Chicago Stadium. Mosienko scored two powerplay goals in the first period, all that the Hawks would need in a 4-1 win. Bill’s game winner was scored on Harry Lumley at 14:42 of the first, assisted by Gus Mortson and Pete Conacher. He also assisted on a second period goal by Conacher.

Between 1941-42 and 1954-55, Bill Mosienko played 710 regular season and just 22 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 1944-45 Lady Byng winner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965.
