Details

After a serious drop in numbers for the 1976-77 NHL season when he scored just 20 goals in 73 games, Bill Barber was back on top of his game in 1977-78 with 41 in 80. Included were nine game winners and four shorthanded goals. Two of those shorties came in the same game on the same penalty kill.

Though his numbers were down in 1976-77, Barber was still able to produce a 5-point game against the Washington Capitals on February 10, 1977. In a 9-2 win at the Spectrum, Bill scored his 18th of the season while assisting on two goals by Rick MacLeish and singles by Ross Lonsberry and Bob Dailey.

In the 1975-76 season mentioned, Barber did have ten game winners amongst his 50 goals. He also led the league with 380 shots on net. Reg Leach led the Flyers with eleven GWG and also led with 61 goals. The two finished third and fourth in the NHL behind a first place tie between Montreal’s Guy Lafleur and Yvan Cournoyer, each with 12.

Three of Barber’s ten GWG that year came against the New York Rangers. On October 26, 1975, he score three of Philadelphia’s goals in a 7-2 win at Madison Square Garden. It was his first of the game that held on as the game winner. Bill also assisted on a Bobby Clarke goal for a 4-point game.

Between 1972-73 and 1983-84, Bill Barber played 903 regular season and 129 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Philadelphia Flyers. The two-time Stanley Cup champion was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
