Card Notes

Boom-Boom is making a comeback after coaching the Quebec Aces for two years. One of the game’s most colourful and productive Right Wingers, the Rangers organization feels Bernie will be a mainstay on their power-play and is one of the best point men in Hockey.

Details

Bernie Geoffrion’s NHL comeback would last two seasons with the New York Rangers. 1966-67 saw decent numbers with 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points over just 58 games but the numbers dropped in 1967-68 with Boom Boom scoring just five over 59 games.

What he did do in 66-67 is help the Blue Shirts reach the post season for the first time since 1961-62. He still couldn’t help them win a series, something they hadn’t done since losing in the Stanley Cup final in 1950.

Interestingly, his most productive game over his first year with New York was against his old team. Geoffrion had a four point night in his second game as a visitor at the Montreal Forum (we take closer look at that game in the Facebook post below).

In the following game against the Canadiens, again at the Forum, Bernie struck again with two goals in a 4-3 Rangers win. Geoffrion had two second period goals with a total of six shots on Montreal goalie Charlie Hodge. The game winning goal also involved former Habs with Don Marshall scoring, assisted by Phil Goyette (and Bob Nevin).

Between 1950-51 and 1967-68, Bernie Geoffrion played 883 regular season and 132 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens and Rangers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972, the same year he became the first ever head coach of the Atlanta Flames.
