Details

For the first time since the introduction of the Art Ross Trophy, there was a tie for the lead in 1961-62. Andy Bathgate and Bobby Hull both finished with 84 points. The first of three Art Ross Trophy tie-breaker rules states that the player with the most goals wins the award. Hull finished the season with 50 goals while Bathgate had 28, meaning Bobby’s name is on the trophy and Andy’s is not.

Interestingly, the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers met in the final game of the 1961-62 season for both teams. Hull and Bathgate both went into the game with 83 points. Bobby scored the first goal of the match, his 50th of the season, at 4:58 of the first period, assisted by Reg Fleming. Andy responded later in the period, scoring his 28th at 10:19, assisted by Earl Ingarfield and Dean Prentice. Neither would get another point in the game and history was made.

1962-63 saw Bathgate finish as the runner-up for the Art Ross again. His 81 points were five behind leader Gordie Howe. His 35 goals were good for fourth, just three goals behind leader Howe. Bobby Hull dropped off significantly, scoring 31 and finishing tied for sixth with teammate Stan Mikita.

Between 1952-53 and 1970-71, Andy Bathgate appeared in 1,069 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Hart Trophy winner in 1958-59 and a Stanley Cup champion with the Maple Leafs, Bathgate was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
