Details

The actual “hardest shot” that Bobby Hull was measured with was 118.3 miles per hour. Although the Golden Jet definitely had a boomer of a shot, it’s hard to compare to the more modern measurements taken at the NHL Skills Competition. At the time, Hull was skating with the puck. Today, the shots are taken from a standing position.

1968-69 would see Hull surpass the 50 goal plateau for the fourth time in his career. He would reach the mark one more time, in 1971-72. His total of 58 goals in 1968-69 set an NHL record but it would last just a season before Phil Esposito would shatter the mark with 76 in 1970-71.

His 50th of the season came in a 4-4 tie with the New York Rangers at Chicago Stadium on March 5, 1969. He put his 49th of the campaign past New York goalie Ed Giacomin with two minutes left in the first period. His second of the match and 50th of the 1968-69 NHL season was scored at 1:43 of the third. Chico Maki assisted on both and scored one of his own. Hull had eight of the 31 shots put toward Giacomin in the game.

Between 1957-58 and 1979-80, Bobby Hull appeared in 1,063 regular season and 119 playoff games in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers. He also played in 411 regular season and 60 playoff games in the WHA between 1972-73 and 1978-79, all with the Jets.

Over his NHL career, Hull won the Art Ross Trophy three times and the Hart Trophy twice. He was a Stanley Cup champion once with Chicago and was part of three Avco World Trophy wins with Winnipeg. Bobby was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983.
