Details
Bob McCord took the long road to the NHL, playing nine years in the AHL before getting a shot with the Boston Bruins. During his American Hockey League days, McCord helped the Springfield Indians to three Calder Cup championships and won the Eddie Shore Award as top defenseman in 1960-61. He returned to the league with the Pittsburgh Hornets in 1966-67, again winning a championship and his second Eddie Shore Award.
McCord’s time in Boston would be over after the 1964-65 NHL season. On May 31, 1965, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings with Ab McDonald and Ken Stephanson for Bob Dillabough, Ron Harris, Albert Langlois and Parker MacDonald. Bob played a total of 26 games with the Wings over three years before going to the Minnesota North Stars and putting in his only two true full NHL seasons.
He had one more championship in him, but again, it was not in the NHL. In 1971-72, he helped the Denver Spurs to a first place overall finish in the WHL and a playoff championship, taking out the Portland Buckaroos in the final.
Between 1963-64 and 1972-73, Bob McCord played 316 regular season and 14 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota North Stars and St. Louis Blues. All 14 of his post season games were played in 1967-68 with the North Stars.
