Perhaps the most talented player on the Islanders, Denis won the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie-of-the-Year in the NHL last season. He’s one of the most versatile and flashy defensemen to come into the league. Most scouts predict he will be an All-Star for many seasons to come. He led the Islanders in scoring last season and also in power play goals with six. He’s a good battler.

The scouts were right. Denis Potvin was named a First Team All-Star defenseman five times and was selected to the Second Team once. Denis would continue to be the scoring leader for the Islanders for the next three seasons until Bryan Trottier took over that role.
Potvin was a three time winner of the Norris Trophy as the top defenseman in the National Hockey League. His first came in 1975-76 and he won the award in consecutive seasons, 1977-78 and 1978-79.
In 1978-79, Denis totaled 101 points on 31 goals and 70 assists. This remains today as the 13th highest single season point total by a blue liner. The record belongs to Bobby Orr and his 139 points for the Boston Bruins in 1970-71.
Denis Potvin went on to play 1,060 regular season and 185 playoff games between 1973-74 and 1987-88, all with the New York Islanders. He helped the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
A note about the info on the back of the card. Potvin’s place of birth listed on the back of the card is Hull, Quebec. There is a discrepancy when looking at several sources. Some list Hull and some list Vanier, Ontario (Ottawa).
