Card Notes
Being traded to Boston after two years of backing up Cesare Maniago and Gump Worsley at Minnesota may have been the best thing that ever happened to Gilles. The quick-moving goalie plays the angles as well as anyone. Coming into his prime as a goaltender, most experts predict stardom for Gilles. He has an extra-quick glove hand which often robs the opposition.
Details
Gilles Gilbert appeared in a total of 44 games over four seasons with the Minnesota North Stars before being sent to Boston. On May 22, 1973, Gilbert was traded straight up to the Bruins for Fred Stanfield.
With Gerry Cheevers spending time in the WHA with the Cleveland Crusaders, Gilles jumped right into the number 1 role with the Bruins, appearing in 54 regular season and 16 playoff games. He helped Boston to reach the Stanley Cup final in 1973-74 before losing to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Once Cheevers returned to the Bruins for the 1976-77 NHL season, Gilbert found himself again as a backup. Albeit, he still got into a decent number of games. He once again became a number one goal after a July 15, 1980 trade sent him to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Rogatien Vachon.
Gilles Gilbert played in 416 regular season National Hockey League games between 1969-70 and 1982-83 with the North Stars, Bruins and Red Wings. Over that time, he posted a 3.27 goals against average with 18 shutouts.
