Card Notes
This short, stocky defenseman is rated as one of the hardest hitters in NHL. Also a good skater and exciting rusher. Broke in with Maple Leafs and was sold to Boston midway in 1954-55. He has always been a favorite with Bruins’ fans.
Details
Leo Boivin was actually original property of the Boston Bruins. A November 16, 1950 trade sent him, along with Fern Flaman, Phil Maloney and Ken Smith to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Bill Ezinicki and Vic Lynn.
After parts of four seasons with the Maple Leafs, Leo was back in Boston via a November 9, 1954 trade that saw Joe Klukay go the other way. Boivin then played the bulk of his National Hockey League career in Bean Town, putting together a resume that would ultimately put him in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
Boivin played 1,150 regular season and 54 Stanley Cup playoff games between 1951-52 and 1969-70 with the Maple Leafs, Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. After retiring, he spent time coaching the Ottawa 67’s in the OHL and the St. Louis Blues in the NHL.
