One of the Bruins best players, John is the sole survivor of the Uke Line of Boston. Johnny broke into the NHL with Detroit in 1955-56, but was traded to Boston the next year for Terry Sawchuk. He is one of the 18 active NHL players scoring over 200 goals.
Details
The Uke Line consisted of Bucyk, Vic Stasiuk and Bronco Horvath. Stasiuk was traded away to the Detroit Red Wings midway through the 1960-61 season. Horvath left Boston for the Chicago Blackhawks following that same 1960-61 campaign.
The trade that brought John Bucyk to Boston occurred on July 10, 1957. Detroit got back Sawchuk after two years with the Bruins and Boston got some cash, along with Bucyk. Johnny had played two seasons with the Red Wings, totaling 30 points in 104 games.
Going into the 1966-67 season, Bucyk had scored 209 NHL regular season goals. By the time his career ended, after the 1977-78 season, he had 556 goals over 1,540 games. That number places him 28th all-time. He is one of just 46 players with 500 or more career NHL goals.
