Details

After seven years in the minors, Ed Johnston was thrust into the Boston Bruins number one role in 1962-63 with no previous NHL experience. Over 50 games with the last place Bruins, Johnston recorded a 4.02 goals against average with a single shutout. He was fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year behind winner Kent Douglas (Toronto Maple Leafs), along with Doug Barkley (Detroit Red Wings) and Wayne Hillman (Chicago Blackhawks).

In 18 of those 50 games, Johnston faced 40 or more shots. His first career shutout was not one of them. On New Year’s Day 1963, Eddie stopped all 32 shots put toward him by the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Garden. John Bucyk scored the game winning goal in the 3-0 victory at 17:58 of the first period on Johnny Bower, assisted by Leo Boivin and Tommy Williams.

Johnston would become part of history in 1963-64. He is the last NHL goaltender to play every minute for his team over the regular season. His numbers improved greatly over his rookie season with a 3.01 GAA and six blanks. However, it wasn’t enough to get the Bruins out of the basement. He tied Tim Horton for tenth in voting for the Hart Trophy with just a pair of votes each.

Between 1962-63 and 1977-78, Ed Johnston played 592 regular season and just 18 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. Despite the lack of post season action, Johnston won two Stanley Cup championships with Boston.
