Card Notes
Skating since he was 3 years old, Doug made the big jump from the Amateurs to the Bruins last season. Considered a great prospect due to his speed, and hard shot, he started slowly, scoring only 3 goals in his first 35 games. But he came back to score 10 more in the last half of the season. During the off-season, he works in a hydro-electric plant.
Details
Doug Mohns scored a modest 13 goals in his rookie 1953-54 NHL season. However, four of those 13 were game winners for the Boston Bruins. Two of those game winning goals came against the Montreal Canadiens while he had one each against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks.
Over a lengthy NHL career that spanned from the 1950’s to the 1970’s, Mohns split time between forward and defense. On five occasions, he had 20 or more goals in a season. Four of those came in consecutive campaigns with the Blackhawks, topping out with 25 in 1966-67.
In 1954-55, Doug had a pair of three assist games, one against the Habs and one against the Hawks. He would get his first NHL hat trick until 1966 but in 1954-55 he had four two goal games. Two of those included the game winning goal, the first on Al Rollins and the Chicago Blackhawks, the other on Gump Worsley and the New York Rangers.
Between 1953-54 and 1974-75, Doug Mohns played 1,389 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota North Stars, Atlanta Flames and Washington Capitals. He was the first ever team captain of the Caps in 1974-75.
