Details

Bucyk started his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, appearing in 38 games in 1955-56 and 66 the following year. On June 10, 1957, he was traded to the Boston Bruins for Terry Sawchuk. His impact was immediate, more than doubling his 1956-57 offensive numbers in his first year with Boston.

To that point in his NHL career, John Bucyk put up highs for goals with 27 and points with 66 in 1962-63. He opened the season with a three point performance against the Montreal Canadiens at Boston Garden on October 11, 1963. In the 5-0 shutout win over the Habs, Bucyk had two goals and an assist for the Bruins.

John opened the scoring at 4:23 of the first, putting one past Jacques Plante, assisted by Wayne Connelly and Murray Oliver. That goal held on as the game winner. Shortly after, he set up a Doug Mohns goal and put Boston up 3-0 with his second goal of the game near the end of the second period. Bob Perreault earned the shutout, making 28 saves and Mohns also had two goals and a helper.

That was the first of three game winning goals for Bucyk in 1962-63, the other two against the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. His goal at 17:58 of the first period on January 1, 1963 at Boston Garden was all the Bruins needed to beat the Leafs, though they would score two more in the match. That was just Boston’s sixth win in 35 games.

Between 1955-56 and 1977-78, John Bucyk played 1,540 regular season and 124 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. The two-time Lady Byng Trophy winner helped the Bruins to two Stanley Cup championships and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
