Details
Michel played major junior with the Montreal Juniors between 1969-70 and 1973-74. Not drafted to the NHL, Dion was a ninth round pick by the WHA Indianapolis Racers in 1974. He went on to five years in the Rebel League between 1974-75 and 1978-79 with the Racers and Cincinnati Stingers.
Dion got his NHL start in 1979-80 after the WHA merged into the NHL. He played 50 games for the Quebec Nordiques that year and recorded his only two NHL shutouts. The first was a 30 save performance in a 5-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets. The second was against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team he would join three years later.
On February 24, 1980 at Le Colisée, Michel made 33 saves and Jamie Hislop scored both goals for the Nordiques in the 2-0 win over the Penguins. Michel Goulet assisted on both Hislop goals. Pittsburgh goalie Rob Holland faced just 17 shots in the loss.
In over half his games with the Pens in 1982-83, Dion faced 30 or more shots in a game. In two of those, he faced 50 and 52. In both, Michel was able to earn a win. He made 48 saves in a each, a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers and a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings.
Between 1979-80 and 1984-85, Michel Dion played 227 regular season and five playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins. In the WHA, he appeared in 149 regular season and playoff games with the Racers and Stingers.
